Lost & FoundSometimes, especially with all the excitement of camp, kids lose things. We recommend that children do not bring valuables with them to camp, and that every parent checking out with their child's instructor at the end of each day takes a moment to ensure that all their child's items go home with them. We are not responsible for lost or stolen property; however, we do maintain a lost and found bin where we collect items that we find.

Junior Instructors (Volunteers)Our Junior Instructor program accepts applicants who are interested in gaining experience in children’s recreation by volunteering at our summer bike camps. Our bike camps concentrate on bike safety and skills for kids ages 2 -12. We have 6 levels teaching everything from training wheels to trail riding. Each level includes 5 learning categories: safety knowledge, safety skills, trail riding, street riding, and bike maintenance. During camp, volunteers will be paired up with an experienced instructor to provide leadership, motivation, encouragement, and comfort to the kids under our care.

What is the Level 3 off-site ride? This ride is for Level 3 riders who aren't quite ready for the road but are ready for an extra challenge later in the week. They may ride off-site to a nearby park or school, if the site allows. A level 3 class will never have children riding along the roads; campers walk their bikes on the sidewalk to their destination where the class will resume riding. Classes review road-riding safety protocols such as sound-offs, what to pack for a ride, traffic signs, and intersection safety during their walk.

Camps for Children with Special NeedsJoyful activity is for everyone! We would love to have your child at camp. Our classes have small ratios of students to instructors and we offer private lessons for those who want one-on-one attention. However, while our instructors are well trained in skill development, safety, class management, and overall program delivery, they are not specifically trained to support children with special needs. To ensure the best Pedalheads experience, some children may require extra support to participate.
-
What bike to bring to campPedalheads asks that all children attending our camps provide your own bike(s) and bike helmet(s) for the camp. Bike recommendations vary depending on your child's skill level. For all bikes, they should be structurally sound with no broken parts or wires that may be unsafe. Check the brakes, tires and the steering of your child’s bike before coming to camp. Special tips for shopping for beginners (Level 1 & Level 2):

-

Should I take the training wheels off my child's bike before camp starts?Pedalheads works with children at many different stages in their bike riding experience. We are always happy to work with whatever bicycle children are able to bring to camp. Prior to camp, we ask that parents decide on whether or not to bring their childrens bikes with training wheels. We recommend that parents bring their child's bike in whatever configuration they are currently most comfortable riding on. For example, if you have attempted to take the training wheels off, but your child has not learned to ride independently, then bring the bike with the training wheels still on.
-
When will my child have their training wheels off?Every child who enrolls in our camp is unique, so taking the training wheels off will come at a different time for each child. We want children to feel proud and excited to take them off, and when we feel the child is ready to take them off, we'll gently encourage and motivate the child to give it a try. To determine whether a child is ready to have their training wheels removed, the site manager or supervisor assesses each child according to our Training Wheels Checklist and obstacle course.
-
How do I know what level to register my child in?Determining your child's level can be difficult but to help you assess your child's riding ability, please consult our website HERE, or give us a call at 1.888.886.6464.

How do you determine if a child is ready to ride on the road? For safety reasons, it's crucial that we make sure your child is road-ready before leaving the site on a road ride. To do this, every child must successfully complete our Road Riding Checklist, be turning 6 years old by the end of the calendar year, and be road-ready, according to a site manager or supervisor. This checklist offers a fun and challenging way to assess your child's road-readiness, both as an independent rider and their ability to ride safely as part of a group.
-
Will my child learn to ride in one week?Every child learns to ride at a different pace. We cannot guarantee that they'll be able to ride in one week. Several factors can affect how quickly they learn to ride a two-wheeler, including age, comfort level on a bike, fears, or having a cautious personality. While some kids learn in one week, others may benefit from more than one session in Level 1 to build confidence and biking skills as part of the learning process.

We do introduce the traditional right-hand signal (left arm out, elbow to the ground and hand to the sky) in more advanced road-riding classes. Both signals are commonly accepted under cycling safety guidelines.

Bike Size ChartHere is a chart indicating approximately what size bike you should purchase for your child, depending on height and age. Please remember that when purchasing a bike for beginners, that their feet should be flat on the ground while seated and that their arms should have a slight bend in the elbows.
-
Helmet SafetyAt Pedalheads, wearing a helmet is the most emphasized safety principle when a child rides a bike. Research shows that up to 90% of fatal bicycle crashes are the result of head trauma. Wearing a properly fitted and certified helmet will cushion and protect the head, significantly decreasing the chance of causing serious brain damage. Over the years, we noticed that many bike riders either do not wear helmets or are wearing helmets that do not properly fit their heads.
